paper art.

ai continue to be fascinated by paper art. the things people make- and how, apparently, they don't completely lose it trying to glue tiny bits of stuff to other stuff.

stumbled across this, this morning. not a new concept, but i do love the example shown, and love that artists website even more.

Work

For the last few months i have been applying like mad to, well, everywhere. The market is tough, and its really tough with only a few years of experience.
I was recently asked to submit some hand and computer drawn textile illustrations. I haven't done a fabric print by hand since college, mostly its unusable. sometimes i sketch something, scan it and create the actual print in illustrator, but rarely.
Below is what i came up with to send them. I'm rather happy with how they turned out, I always feel my croquis are a bit cartoon-y.

Could I make it? Maybe. or something similar, that gave the same impression, but was less complicated. frankly i think you need an industrial machine to do some of those seams.

sold a roll top desk and a pair of roller skates to buy a banjo.

For several moths i have been taking banjo lessons. Actually for the last couple i haven't, but have been practicing at home.
I have been renting an instrument, the deal was, the rental fees from the first 6 months become a store credit towards purchase of an instrument, after that they just go into the void of rental fees.
I've reached my 6 month mark, and I'm still interested in learning. really learning, how to play.
Its an instrument that i like, and my chance to have a musical ability beyond the simplest one note song i learned on the recorder in 3rd grade.It has become clear that it would be in my best interest to invest in a really good beginner/ intermediate banjo, rather than a cheap one.also i have been renting a nice one. so you know. hard to go back now.
So. i sold my roll top desk, and my roller skates to buy a banjo.
Option 1.
I've been renting the Deering Goodtime II. it's easy to tune and the sound is good. but its plain. and who ever designed the head was an idiot.



But I've been researching painting it. I've heard that painting can change the sound, but by how much i don't know. A number of months ago i fell in love with the Sara Ryan painted Creston guitars.What if i added similar style designs on the back and head? [i do know of people who have taken the whole thing apart to refinish it, but i don't want to do that.]

I've looked at numerous pics of this banjo and it is very red and apparently there is quite a bit of gold- rather than nickle color on it.
i like the mother of pearl inlay. overall it is much prettier.

oh Etsy. you make my heart flutter.

i was going to post about our trip last weekend to Yarmony Grass. But alas, my camera's battery charger is no where to be found.

I have been looking around Etsy lately, always amazed at what i find there. thinking aobut opening a store. Seems like as good a time as any to get into the faery crown buisness. [besides i have some supplies, might as well try to sell a few.]

comics

i love comics, always have.

have tried to draw a few. never get very far, its not that i give up, but that i find it really hard to sit down and draw at the end of the day. being in an art based field, where my creativity has to be "on" at all times, it is hard to come home and do some more. drawing a comic is completely different than what i do at work, but i have it lumped into that creative category, along with the craft projects i no longer do.

came across this little rambling today, and thought i would share it with you. you being all the people who ever wanted to self publish your comic.

the art of art.

as everyone knows, the art you create, you usually hate. Sometimes i look back over sketches i did 6 months to several years ago and they are better than i remembered. however things i thought were good at the time, i often no longer like. i don't know if this has to do with personal expectations, or what.

i need to start drawing again. i had started a project that i thought would be helpful to me, but quickly got distracted and it is now gathering dust.

i want to start that project again, but i am coming up with lots of excuses for why i haven't.
1. i spend all day trying to be creative- a lot of forced creativity. which is hard.
2. i don't have time. [i do.]
3. i admire so many other peoples wide ranging illustration styles and am discouraged, feeling that mine are inferior and, pretty much, crap. i really haven't found my "style."

i know that i need to just get out that pencil, and draw, and stop worrying. because i do have the time, i just enjoy being lazy. but lazy is less enjoyable when it is the only thing you do.

grouchy day.
anyone keeping track- the headache kicked in at 3:34... it is 6:46- i still have it.

missed derby tonight. bad mood. needed to get my art project done. its due tomorrow. i still feel- grudgingly- that grades are important. that does not mean that i am any less stubborn, or willing to follow directions.

will have to try to make derby tomorrow after class.

i have always loved used pallets and paper towels from art projects. always wanted to save them and frame them. maybe i should just get into the habit of photographing them. it would be much easier and more likely to happen than my train art photography project. and i have wanted to do the photo a day project, but have not. maybe if i had a web cam and could just click it every morning when i eat breakfast.



went to the TCM Clinic yesterday. basically they told me to "sweet jesus, stay the fuck away from gluten," and come back in 2 weeks. i am willing to listen to them. time to get more serious. time for Tim to eat the rest of the jalapenio poppers.- i call dibs on the tater-tots though.
oh grouchyness... leave me alone.
now i need to go see my doc. so they can refer me to the sleep center. time to get checked out for sleep apnea. wheee....
and the night guard will not be covered by the insurance. thank you mr. dentest. i really didnt want to do something fun with the tiney extra i make this yr. from my raise.

They purchased it in the first few years of their marriage. i came across the artist while looking for "inspiration" for my art class. I have seen this style from other artist and was not sure it was the same. My mother corrected the story i remembered about the piece, told me what they had payed and so forth. I looked it up, did the inflation calculator and so forth- it has almost quadrupled in value.
I don't nessacaraly like a lot of the other work by this artist, but a few i do, and this is one of them.
